When to Install New Windows

Some features in your home make it very clear when they need to be replaced. Unfortunately, not everything is as obvious as pulling out an old air filter and seeing it caked with dust, pet dander, and other things you’re glad you weren’t breathing in. Take your windows, for example. There are many things that can go wrong with them, but plenty of those issues either appear to be minor or don’t affect you frequently enough to register as real problems. Luckily, you don’t have to be a trained and licensed window installer to spot these details!

Signs That It’s Time to Install Replacement Windows

If you don’t know when you need to have replacement windows installed, the good news is that some of your initial guesses are probably correct, or at least pretty close. But the more you know about the signs of a failing window, the sooner you can take action and call a window company for help.

Energy Efficiency Issues

These may not be visible to the naked eye, but feeling a problem is just as validating as actually seeing it. And there are a number of ways in which you can physically tell that you have an inefficient window:

  • You feel drafts when you walk past it, especially in cooler weather
  • You find yourself adjusting the temperature on the nearest thermostat more often than usual
  • Your energy bills seem to be getting more expensive each month, even if your home lifestyle hasn’t changed
  • Your furniture, flooring, and other items near the window are fading from exposure to unblocked UV rays
  • You feel as though you can better hear all kinds of noises that are occurring outside your home

Broken Window Components

There’s no damage indicator more obvious than a broken glass pane, and that’s a sign that you need to call a window company right now—not later. Of course, that’s not the only element of a window that can become damaged and create a need for a full replacement. Do you notice fog and condensation building up inside your (intact) window panes from time to time, like after it rains? That is often a sign of seal failure, which can let unwanted moisture through the windows and even into the home.

Another example is with the operation of the window itself. Do you find yourself struggling to open and close it, or to even move the sash at all? That’s yet another way for your windows to tell you that it’s time to call the window company.

Aging Windows

When installed properly and rarely subjected to harsh conditions, you should be able to get at least 15 years of reliable performance from your windows before they experience seal failure. If your windows were installed 15 or more years ago, it’s time to at least start planning to have new ones installed.

Improperly Installed Windows

You may never have taken the time to walk around your home’s exterior and inspect the windows themselves for signs of subpar installation. Maybe you don’t know everything that a professional installer or home inspector would look for, but you’d surely be able to see issues such as misalignment within the window opening and incomplete sealing.

Dated Appearance

If you simply don’t like the way your windows look anymore, or you know that they don’t fit the vision you have for an upcoming home remodel, that’s just as valid a reason to install new windows as any of the aforementioned signs!
